Consultation

Navigating school processes can be overwhelming. You don’t need to do it alone. Consultation may include things such as review and interpretation of a 504 accommodation plan or Individualized Education Program (IEP) and advice on how to advocate for your child’s needs within the school setting.

Psychoeducational Evaluation

If you suspect a learning difference and have concerns about your child’s academic progress, how they process information, and their social-emotional/behavioral functioning, a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation is recommended. This type of evaluation includes a thorough review of records, observations, cognitive/processing tests, academic achievement testing, and social-emotional/behavioral assessments. You will receive a written report of the results along with specific recommendations for your child and any diagnoses related to academic learning processes, if applicable. The report will be reviewed with you at a one hour feedback meeting. An additional feedback meeting can be scheduled separately with your child.

Social-Emotional Evaluation

Perhaps your child has already been identified as having a learning difference or you don’t have any significant academic concerns but are worried about their social-emotional/behavioral functioning. This targeted evaluation may be appropriate if you suspect that your child has a neurodevelopmental disability such as autism or ADHD or if they are otherwise struggling socially, emotionally, or behaviorally. This type of evaluation includes a brief measure of intelligence but does not typically include extensive cognitive or academic achievement testing. You will receive a written report of the results along with specific recommendations and any diagnoses, if applicable. A feedback meeting is included and an additional feedback meeting can be scheduled separately with your child.

Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)

If your child has had an evaluation completed by your school district and you do not agree with the results, you have the right to obtain an IEE with an evaluator who is not employed by the school district. This is a process you would start with the district. If the school district approves the IEE, they will provide you with a list of qualified professionals in the area. You do not have to choose someone from this list. You may choose another qualified professional. Dr. McLay is qualified to complete IEEs and will consider them on a case-by-case basis.
